Hoffenheim Coach Retreat for Cardiovascular Reasons

Hoffenheim coach, Huub Stevens resigned from the team that was struggling from the threat of relegation in the German league (Bundesliga) on Wednesday (10/02) local time, for reasons of heart health.

"I am sorry to leave the club in a difficult situation," said the 62-year-old coach told reporters.

"I took this decision following the advice of a physician ... who checked me in." Stevens also said he may have to undergo surgery.

The Dutchman, who saved VfB Stuttgart from relegation in the last two seasons, replacing Markus Gisdol in October.

But after 10 games that he tagani in Hoffenheim, they only managed one win and are currently languishing in 17th place with 14 points, the same as the bottom club Hanover 96.

Assistant coach Alfred Schreuder and Armin Reutershan has taken over the team's current coach, with youth team coach Julian Nagelsmann setup to take the reins next season.

Hoffenheim, who backed billionaire and SAP co-founder Dietmar Hopp, escaped from minor league before winning promotion to the top division in 2008.

Stevens, who among other things has also coached Schalke 04, Hertha Berlin, Hamburg SV and Cologne, signed an agreement contract with Hoffenheim until the end of the season.
