Face Belarussian Tennis Player Sharapova Will Be Absent at Fed Cup

World number six Maria Sharapova will miss the Fed Cup play-off match against his country of Belarus, the Russian tennis federation said on Tuesday (09/02) local time.

"Sharapova is certainly not going to play," the news agency R-Sport quoted Russian tennis chief Shamil Tarpishchev.

"He'll be busy with the tournaments in the US."

Sharapova is still on track for the Olympics Rio de Janeiro this summer after multiple categories registered as a player for the team of the country, in the Fed Cup first round match against the Netherlands last week.

Grand Slam champion five times the Tarpishchev warned earlier this month that he was at risk of not appearing in Rio if he failed to appear at the Fed Cup match, in which Russia lost 1-3.

Russia will now entertain Belarus - who beat Canada in the World Group II last week - on 16 and 17 April in order to avoid relegation from the World Group I.
